A SPECIAL WIMBLEDON CELEBRATION HONOURING LIFELONG RELATIONSHIPS AND ELENA BALTACHA’S LEGACY

Posted 29th Jun

The Elena Baltacha Foundation was proud to celebrate a truly memorable day at Wimbledon, made possible through the incredible generosity of the WTA Foundation, who provided six Wimbledon tickets for six remarkable young women whose journeys in tennis all began with our Foundation.

These six girls represent exactly what the Elena Baltacha Foundation stands for. While their time in our programs may have begun many years ago, our commitment to them has never ended. We have always believed that supporting young people extends far beyond their first tennis lesson or junior competition. It means building lifelong relationships, offering guidance through every stage of their development, and always being there as they pursue their ambitions both on and off the court.

It was especially meaningful to celebrate these enduring connections at Wimbledon. All six girls continue to return throughout the year to support our Giving Back programme, volunteering their time to inspire the next generation of Foundation players. Their willingness to mentor younger children perfectly reflects the values Elena Baltacha lived by: kindness, resilience, generosity, and the importance of helping others succeed. Seeing former participants return as role models is one of the Foundation’s greatest achievements and demonstrates the lasting impact of our community.

Five of the six young women are now thriving on tennis scholarships in the United States, successfully combining world-class tennis training with outstanding educational opportunities. Through the support and guidance of the Elena Baltacha Foundation, each was able to identify scholarship placements that matched both their academic aspirations and athletic potential.

The American collegiate system offers an extraordinary pathway for talented young athletes. It enables students to compete at an elite level while earning internationally recognised degrees, developing independence, leadership skills, and lifelong friendships along the way. For many aspiring players, it provides the ideal balance between sporting excellence and educational achievement, ensuring they leave university equipped for successful futures both within and beyond tennis. Watching these young women flourish in this environment is a source of enormous pride for everyone connected to the Foundation.

The day became even more special as we welcomed two distinguished guests: Trish Bostrom, a top former American tennis player, and Penny Moor, former British tennis player and Trustee of the Elena Baltacha Foundation. Trish and Penny are two of the pioneering founding members of the WTA, alongside the legendary Billie Jean King, and it was an honour for our girls to spend time with two players whose contribution transformed women’s tennis forever.

The founding members of the WTA changed the landscape of women's sports through extraordinary courage, determination, and vision. At a time when female players fought for equal opportunities, recognition and fair prize money, they united to create a professional tour that would empower generations to come.

Their efforts established higher standards for equality, professionalism, and opportunity, not only in tennis but across women's sports worldwide. Every young female athlete competing today benefits from the foundations they built, proving that lasting change is achieved through collective leadership, resilience, and an unwavering belief that women deserve equal opportunities to succeed.

Trish shared heartfelt and inspiring words with the girls throughout the event, encouraging them to appreciate every opportunity, embrace challenges, and always remain true to themselves. Drawing on her own experiences at the highest level of the game, she reminded them that success is built through perseverance, resilience, and maintaining perspective during both victories and setbacks.

Her warmth, humility, and genuine interest in each girl's individual journey made a lasting impression. Hearing firsthand stories from someone who helped shape the history of women's tennis was an unforgettable experience and reinforced the belief that every dream is achievable through hard work, courage, and determination. It was also wonderful to celebrate Trish's own remarkable career, having recently been invited to the Royal Box at the French Open in recognition of reaching the quarter-finals at Roland-Garros during her playing days.

We are incredibly grateful for our very special relationship with the WTA Foundation, whose continued support creates opportunities that extend far beyond the tennis court. Together, we are able to provide unforgettable experiences that inspire young people, broaden horizons, and strengthen confidence. Partnerships built on shared values allow us to invest in the next generation while honoring the pioneers who came before them. Together, we can continue creating exceptional opportunities, unforgettable memories, and life-changing experiences for young people for many years to come.

Our sincere thanks go once again to the WTA Foundation for making this unforgettable Wimbledon experience possible. Moments like these remind us that tennis is about far more than competition; it is about community, opportunity, inspiration, and the lifelong friendships that the sport creates.

Above all, days like this ensure that Elena Baltacha's spirit continues to shine brightly. Elena believed passionately in giving every young person the chance to realise their potential, regardless of background or circumstance. She understood that success was measured not only by achievements on the court but by kindness, resilience, generosity and the willingness to lift others along the way.

Every scholarship earned, every young player inspired, and every former participant who returns to support the next generation keeps her vision alive. Her legacy lives on in every opportunity we create, every relationship we nurture, and every life we help transform. We know Elena would have been immensely proud to see these remarkable young women continuing to give back, inspire others, and carry her values forward, ensuring her influence will continue to shape future generations for many years to come.
